United Through the Live-Stream
Adapting to a life cooped up inside during the pandemic is something that struck the world in shock — especially our electronic community of show and festival lovers. What are we to do on these weekend nights where we would see our friends as well as our favorite artists to rage in unison? Our place of fun and freedom may be closed for now, but that doesn’t mean all of the doors are shut. The life of the live-stream has been vibrant and flourishing in living rooms and bedrooms across the globe; ultimately unifying us all.
The future for us, artists, as well as event organizers, promoters, and so on is unseen. We can’t make a call on what will happen next, but resilient industry won’t go down without a fight for us all. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, but transformed; and thats exactly what the live streams airing via online platforms such as Twitch and Youtube have done for us. The transformation from live shows from a venue to your television screen makes the experience accessible for all; reaching anyone willing to tune out and tune in.
There’s some kind of beauty in staying up until 2 am with your quarantine crew to parade around the house to your favorite djs in the game while hundreds of thousands of people from around the world are doing the same. Before we could mark our calendars for the Friday night out on the dance floor, yet despite the drastic change in environment, I still look forward to these live-stream sets as much as I did going out to shows now. The energy of being “together” while miles apart is quite unmatched. Being able to comment back and forth with viewers on live chats about the sets has been very entertaining and even helpful to be able to ID some of those tracks you’ve heard mid set and need to know the name of! Many of these sets are also recorded and uploaded to listen again & again (I definitely have replayed Liquid Stranger’s, Subtronics’ and Rezz’s a few times myself.) Viewers even get creative enough to dress the part and get in their rave gear for the “show“; including myself— its the perfect time to break in those new rave shoes around your house.
We may not know when the next shows are just yet, but the community at large has us covered. Shout out to Insomniac, Proximity, Beatport, and various charities as well as numerous artists hosting their own streams to benefit those losing their livelihood while keeping us on the edge of our sofas for the next drop. Some artists have even hosted their virtual events immersed in a whole other online world of MineCraft and FortNite. Though this isn't the first time an artist like Marshmello has made a gaming experience, but the pandemic has seemed to spark more interest in this endeavor in another way to “be at” a show amidst the restrictions upon the public. Disciple as well as Porter have hosted their own fest line ups representing their label’s top names and in tribute to Porter’s Second Sky Fest.
Be sure to tune into the 2nd edition of the Digital Mirage festival this weekend! The line up will have your music tastes covered all weekend long with a array of djs ranging from the styles of San Holo to ZHU. Insomniac is also now donating a portion of proceeds towards The EQUAL JUSTICE INITIATIVE program and the NAACP in response to the death of George Floyd and in support of the BLM movement. Stand by for 12th Planet, Bandlez, Adventure club and more from their streams in the next few weeks! Click the link below to donate to the cause and charities today. Who says you can’t make a difference from your couch?
